I plan to go see The Golden Compass tomorrow. My neighbor and friend Abby, in Brooklyn, recommended the series during my last year in NYC. I loved it. In Jesus Name, I really wish the Focus on the Family and Catholic Coalition…and all the deeply deeply frightened christians in North America would, for once, pause….. and get a life…and get a faith. Seriously, how small is your God? I was on the treadmill at my gym listening to Radiohead when I saw the headlines… (yes, I listen to music but watch the headlines-it’s CNN after all) “Culture Wars, Christians worry that Compass TEACHES ATHIESM to children.” Good. Teach athiesm to children, because any good christian must come to terms with her/his inner athiest…and any athiest… usually far more reasonable than this brand of ‘believers’ will usually tell you of her/his journey in and out of faith. If God is there, then God is there. If God is not, then God is not. I believe we are loved. You know that if you’ve listened to my songs… I do believe in God… bigger than my disbelief, bigger than my rage, bigger than my stupidity, bigger than my doubt, bigger than all the infantile projections (oh the thousands) thrown her/his way…I do believe. I believe that God and God’s love are so big that we can barely conceive… and The Golden Compass… what’s wrong with being pissed with Christendom…? I’m pissed.Good, someone recognized as many do that organized religion is often God’s worst press. Fear Fear Fear.
I wonder if it is easier to believe your “christian” children will be encouraged towards athiesm by a movie than to believe they may lack belief because that is exactly what you model… fear… not belief. God help us all with the media giving you such voice. Grow up.
Now, to be fair… I haven’t seen the movie. Maybe it will just plain suck…and well… that’ll just be what it is..another poor adaption… la dee da.
