School and Music

Hey folks,

FIrst, we play The Park Pub this sunday the 29th of July at 8pm ish….. probably two sundays after that as well! :) If you haven’t made it out to one of these gigs, they are lovely in the most organic sense. The players, Matt Stauffer, Michael Kroll, and John Burkhardt are fabulous. It’s funny that I had been in Ireland not long before moving here. The thing that struck me about music in Ireland was that it was a community thing. It centered around gathering and community, around lives bumping up against each other in good and hard times. The Park is becoming something like that. You will find people playing pool (and as it turns out apparently loving the music, stragglers from baseball games celebrating or drinking their woes away with some pints, and lots of chatting, laughter and intensity…and then there are the growing number of folks just coming out to listen to us play. It’s a good place run by good people. And, humbly, I will say that we are sounding very very good as well! For those of you interested in my journey, I am loving school for the most part. I have just finished my first year of grad school—doing a Masters in Counseling Psychology at a seminary—studying theology as well. It’s a blast really, and as I wrote in my application, it doesn’t seem like much of a stray from what I have been trying to work through all these years in music. I firmly believe that there is no greater or more damaging defense against one’s own truth and story than religion gone sour. And, there is plenty plenty of that around! At the same time, I have found that faith often becomes the place I turn to find the courage to face my truth and story. The territory between psychology and theology both fascinates and terrifies me, and I believe it does for good reason. Having said this, I love studying again. It is a great privilege to be able to integrate and synthesize ideas and many more years of life! Join us if you can at The Park, and say hello if you like! Peace, Deb
