Road Hockey and The Met

Tuesday, May 23rd, 2006

Two weeks ago, I had the joy of getting decked out in a new dress, pair of heels, pearls and purse in hand to go to the Opera. I stood there outside the met by the fountain waiting of course for my friend who had received tickets.. it was so much fun to be out on a friday night and a beautiful one indeed..waiting for the opera..having a glass of Champagne..and feeling beautiful. This Saturday I will dress up in another kind of outfit. The road hockey gear! I have challenged my nephews to a game of road hockey. “You two (9 years and almost 6 years) and ALL your friends in the hood against YOUR DAD AND I!! I am actually looking forward to purchasing my hockey stick and taping it up..I will get one with a slight curve..for right handed road hockey players like myself. As a kid, I LOVED this game. Despite being Canadian and having grown up in Ottawa, I still sadly make for comic relief as a skater…I will do it if I must..but I look really funny and frankly suck just enough to not really enjoy it either. Needless to say, I never got to far at ice hockey! (Although, when I was about 7 years old, I was borrowed because a team in my neighbourhood was going to default. they suited me up and stuck me in the net as goalie and said, “Just try and keep the puck out!”) But road hockey my friend….well that is about as fun as playing Little Black Box LIVE on stage :) So boys beware, aunt deb is on her way, and you kids are going to LOSE!!
Peace and Pucks, A Deb

The Ottawa Senators and Things that Matter

Saturday, May 13th, 2006

Well, it’s been a while as I am busy applying for grad school. Essay land. But more importantly I have discovered my 9 year old nephew is a HUGE hockey fan. It has become the topic of interest, the point of relevance, the opportunity for this aunt to show up and be very very cool. Thus, on this Saturday night in the very hip Brooklyn I found myself trying to find a bar that was PLAYING the hockey game. Thanks to Apartment 138, or 145…whatever…I was able to experience the sad loss of the Ottawa to Buffalo. Turns out, according to my bar friend for the night, Buffalo has some serious energy and ’story’ behind their gutsy win depite Ottawa’s dominaton of the 2nd and 3rd period ( AND REMEMBER I HAVN’T WATCHED HOCKEY FOR QUITE A WHILE!!!)…a story about friendship and loss and trajedy turned into energy. Anyhow, so goes life. Winners are born from difficult stories sometimes. Nephews and Aunts can find great connections if you’re willing to sit alone at a bar on a Saturday to be able to hold the very very important conversation about another kind of loss. A loss in Hockey. A loss in what matters to the heart and mind of a nine year old. That’s it for me on this one. Sorry Dude, but there’s still the Oilers…I will be checking in with them soon! Meanwhile…steady yourself because we have a street hockey challenge that I have promised to win very soon! Rock On, Aunt Deb
